Offensive Explosion Propels Bees Past Spartans

Box Score Tampa, Florida – The No. 1 ranked SCAD women's lacrosse team had five players score multiple goal as the Bees defeated Tampa 19-15 Monday night at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex.  With the win the Bees improve to 5-1, while the Spartans drop to 4-6.

The Spartans struck first scoring the first three goals of the contest.  SCAD responded as Shannon Flaherty found Taylor Vaccaro for a goal to cut the lead to 3-1.  SCAD won the ensuing draw and on the Bees possession Joanna Ehatt connected with Jordan Cook for a goal to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 24:17 remaining in the first half.  The two teams traded goals before Charlotte Cutts found Kayla Nelson cutting towards the cage to even the score 4-4. 

Vacarro and Nelson netted back-to-back goals to give the Bees their first lead of the game which they wouldn't relinquish.  After the two teams traded goals, Nelson took advantage of a Spartans turnover and netted an unassisted goal to give SCAD an 8-5 lead with 8:44 remaining in the first half.  Tampa scored four of the next seven goals to cut the lead to 11-9 at the break. 

Just over a minute into the second half, Charlotte Walters converted a free position shot to extend the lead to 12-9.  Tampa scored back-to-back goals before Sophie Cutts connected with Cook for a goal with 23:33 remaining in the game.  Minutes later, Charlotte Cutts found Ehatt in transition for a goal to extend the lead to 14-11.  Tampa took advantage of two Bees penalty to score back-to-back goals and cut the lead to 14-13 with 17:04 left.  SCAD responded as Charlotte Cutts netted two straight goals to extend the Bees lead to 16-13.  SCAD scored three of the final five goals for the 19-15 final. 

Charlotte Cutts led the Bees with seven points, netting three goals and dishing out four assists.  Nelson netted five goals, while Cook and Vaccaro each scored a hat trick. 

Torii Clark picked up a team-high five ground balls, while Flaherty picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.  Jenny Danko made 12 saves in the win.  It was the fourth time this season that Danko recorded double-digit saves in a game. 

The Bees will return to action Friday, March 20, when they travel to Waleska, Georgia to face fourth-ranked Indiana Tech in a neutral site match-up.  Game time is scheduled
for 1 p.m.
