M. Lacrosse Defeats Emmanuel 16-7 to Go 2-0 on Season

2/14/2014 11:10:00 PM

The Men's Lacrosse Team faced a real challenge at the SCAD Sports Complex this evening when it took on the Emmanuel College Eagles.  Emmanuel came into the match with a 3-0 record and a scoring average of 18 goals a game.  It looked like it might be the first real test for the Bees.

But it only took a few minutes into the first period to demonstrate that the Bees were not going to be intimidated by the visiting Lions from Franklin Springs, Georgia.  Senior midfielder Matt Dean gave the Bees a 1-0 lead when he scored his first goal of the season.  And the Bees never looked back.  At the end of the first period SCAD built a 5-2 lead.  In fact, the Bees outscored the Lions in every period of the match and won the contest by a score of 16-7.

The win pushes the Bees to a 2-0 record early in the 2014 season.  As they showed in their first win against The Citadel, a total team effort provided the Bees with another victory.  Eight different players took part in the scoring with Justin McGinnis contributing 5, Cody Sienkiewicz, Tucker Hotte, Shawn Horsey, and Dean scoring 2 each, and Evan Ruszala, Aaron Farabee, and Riley Mann adding 1 apiece.

Once again Matt Mantel showed his tenacity as he saved 14 shots on goal and giving up only 7 goals to a team who had dominated its previous three opponents by scoring a total of 58 goals.  The Bees dominated every category.  They took 56 shots compared to Emmanuel's 40.  They had 45 ground balls to the Lions' 28.  Andrew Gualtieri and Doug Henry combined to win 17 Face-Offs compared to Emmanuels 9.

Coach Mike Cummings must feel pretty good about his team thus far.  But the Bees will not have much time to savor the victory.  Tomorrow they face their first conference match.  Palm Beach Atlantic, who average 12 goals per game in its first 3 matches, comes to Savannah to make its own statement in the Southeast Conference.  Come out and support your Bees at 7 p.m.
