HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - Georgia Tech scored seven of eight goals in one stretch as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Savannah College of Art and Design men's lacrosse team 11-6 Friday (Feb. 6) evening at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
The Bees, who are ranked 14th in the preseason MCLA the Lax Mag Division II poll, fell to 0-1. SCAD returns to action Sunday (Feb. 8) at 1 p.m. when they will face Florida State University.
SCAD jumped out to a 2-1 lead with 10:17 remaining in the second quarter after
Shelton Polka and
Stewart Yost scored on back-to-back goals. Eric Crawshaw tied the match at 2 on a goal just over a minute later. The Yellow Jackets broke open the match right before halftime as Neal Toomey scored twice in the final 1:57.
Derek Shurson, who scored twice in the match, pulled the Bees within a goal at 4-3 as he converted on a chance in front of the next with 10:57 left in the third quarter. However, Georgia Tech took control as they reeled off four unanswered goals, including two by Greg Horton, to take an 8-3 advantage with 11:31 to play.
The Bees tried to mount a rally as Polka and Yost tallied their second goals of the match to get within 8-5, but that would be as close as SCAD would get.
