No. 6 Women’s Soccer Wins Sun Conference Tournament Championship

Box Score HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The No. 6 SCAD women's soccer team won the Sun Conference Tournament Championship on Friday, defeating No. 12 Southeastern 2-0 to clinch the title.
 
RECORDS: The Bees are now 17-1-2 while the Fire are 11-5-2.
 
DID YOU KNOW? This is the first time in program history SCAD has won the Sun Conference Tournament Championship, and it's the 13th shutout of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Bees held Southeastern to only three shots in the first half, as neither team scored to go into the half 0-0.
 
The first goal of the game came in the 62nd minute when Ida Akesson won the ball in a scramble in the middle of the box and put it past the goalie to give the Bees a 1-0 lead.
 
Ines Sommer, off an assist from Sydney Chura. Chura crossed the ball into an approaching Sommer, who fired it past the goalie to make it a 2-0 game at the 80:02 mark.
 
The Bees did not let the Fire take another shot for the remainder of the game to win 2-0 and earn the automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Ida Akesson and Ines Sommer totaled one goal and two shots on goal while Sydney Chura added an assist and two shots on goal.
 
The Bees defense held the Fire to only three shots on goal in the shutout win. Goalie Katelynn Balsiger totaled three saves in her 90 minutes of work.
 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: At the conclusion of the game, the 2023 Sun Conference All-Tournament Team was announced and the Bees totaled five honorees.
 
Hailey Lander was named the Tournament MVP, playing in all 180 minutes of the tournament and leading a Bees' defense that did not let in a single goal, while holding the opponents to a total of five shots on goal.
 
Ida Akesson, Ines Sommer, Berglind Baldursdottir, and Sydney Chura joined Lander on the All-Tournament Team.
 
WHAT'S NEXT? The Bees will advance to the NAIA National Championship Opening Rounds. The location is still to be determined, it will be announced on Monday, November 13.
