Box Score 3 Resilience has been one of the themes this season for SCAD women's soccer.
A team heavily populated by underclassmen built a storming six-game Sun Conference unbeaten streak only to be upended by shutout losses on October 24 against Southeastern (0-3), and to Keiser (0-5) on October 27.
In Saturday's match-up in Miami against Johnson & Wales, the Lady Bees got off to a slow start, falling behind to the Wildcats 1-0 in the 26
th minute. "Our confidence level was low from the two games we'd lost," admitted Coach
Rebecca Gunn. SCAD equalized only three minutes later,
Alyssa Rodemsky's heading in a corner kick from fellow sophomore
Meghan Grable, only to fall behind again shortly before half-time.
"We told the girls to either start fighting now or our season will be over before we know it," Coach Gunn said of the mood at half-time. "Our aim was pretty clear: Step it up."
Up stepped senior
Kelly McKay, who in the 64
th minute gained possession approximately 40 yards out, before dribbling an opposing defender and sending a screamer into J&W's net. The score remained deadlocked into the final minutes, when Grable played a through-ball to
Mackenzie Kastner for the winner.
"The relief of getting that late goal was enormous," Coach Gunn said. "It really showed our team's will to win, and resilience to come from behind for the victory."
The Lady Bees conclude their regular season at home against Thomas University, Tuesday, November 1, at 5 p.m. Come on out and catch the action!
