Box Score Miami, Florida – Zola Owsley scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute as the SCAD women's soccer team upset 23rd-ranked St. Thomas 1-0 in their Sun Conference opener. With the win the Bees improve to 4-3-1, while the Bobcats fall to 3-4.
SCAD began the game strong controlling the ball majority of the first half and outshooting St. Thomas 9-2 but we unable to score keeping the game tied 0-0 at halftime. Julia Mangione had two opportunities to score midway through the first half, the first one hit of the post and the other was saved by Cristina Garwacki.
The strong defensive effort continued for both teams in the second half. Both teams took five shots but only one was on target and was saved by their respective goalie to keep the game scoreless at the end of regulation.
St. Thomas came out attacking to start the first overtime. The Bobcats took two corner kicks and two shots in the six minutes of overtime. In the 96th minute, SCAD substituted Owlsey back in the game at attack. Less than two minutes later, the Bees forced a turnover and Meadhbh Deeney found Owsley on the break-away for the score.
Sara Hall made two saves as SCAD picked up their fourth shutout of the season.
This is the first time since September 6, 2013 that the Bees have upset a ranked opponent. The last time it happened SCAD defeated 13th-ranked Cumberland University 5-3.
SCAD return to action Sunday when they travel to Miramar, Florida to take on conference rival Florida Memorial. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
