W. Soccer Falls to Georgia Gwinnett 2-6

9/2/2014 5:06:00 PM

Box Score

Georgia Gwinnett brought a 1-1 record to the SCAD Athletics Complex to face the Lady Bees, who were 2-2 overall, but 0-2 in home games. The ladies were hoping to get back to the offensive prominence that they showed in their first win of the season against Middle Georgia when they put six goals on the board.  But the Grizzlies of Gwinnett had other plans.

It looked as if another defensive battle was going to take place for SCAD as they could not push the ball to the net. Gwinnett was having no problems with opportunities to score, but a stiff defense on the part of the Bees kept the score at 0-0 until the 17:30 mark in the first period. It was then that the Grizzlies scored to break the tie. Three and a half minutes later Georgia Gwinnet scored again to take a 2-0 lead.

The match was a tight one even though the Bees were down by two. But the Grizzlies kept the pressure on the home team. When they scored two more goals in a two minute period it looked like SCAD might be in for another shutout. The first period ended with Georgia Gwinnett ahead 4-0.

Coach Gunn must have gotten through to the Bees at halftime because they came out in the second period with renewed energy. Sophomore Kelly McKay (undeclared) scored her third goal of the season 10 minutes into the period to draw SCAD within three at 4-1. The clock was not friendly to the Bees. The time was slipping away when the Grizzlies scored with six minutes left in the game to get the lead back to four at 5-1.

Senior Alex Weinberg (B.A., advertising) scored an unassisted goal for the Bees three minutes later to once again get the score to 5-2, but Georgia Gwinnett doused the hopes of any comeback when the Bees gave up a final Grizzly goal with only three minutes left in the game.

It was not to be. On paper the statistics were quite even with Gwinnett edging the Bees in shots taken 15 to 14. Even the shots on goal were close with Gwinnett taking only one more than SCAD at 8-7. But the result was a 6-2 loss as SCAD falls to 2-3 on the season.

The Bees are again at home this Saturday, Sept. 6, as they take on Middle Georgia State for its second game with the Lady Knights. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. at the SCAD Athletics Complex, 3650 Speedway Blvd., Hardeeville, South Carolina. Come out and cheer on your SCAD Bees.
