Box Score
The SCAD Women's Soccer team achieved one more shutout victory of the season, routing Florida Memorial with a whopping 5-0 score. The Tuesday night game took place on home turf during Senior Day, which brought great support to our women. The Lady Bees end their regular season with an 11-6 overall record and 7-2 in conference. Ten of SCAD's 11 victories this season have been shutout wins.
The first score of the game did not take place until the second period, but it was only a matter of time considering the pressure that the SCAD women put on the Florida Memorial Lady Lions. In the opening period, SCAD had 14 shots compared to just two for Florida Memorial. Six of those shots were on goal, so the opposing goalie had to work hard to sustain the scoreless period.
Early in the second period, the Lady Bees were able to break through the opposing defense. Nine minutes in, the ladies scored two goals. Alex Weinberg and Meadhbh Deeney scored their sixth and seventh goals of the season, respectively, to give the Lady Bees a 2-0 advantage.
Later, freshman Claire Puginier came through in a big way by scoring two consecutive goals halfway through the final half to make it a 4-0 game. Before the end of the game, Carissa Cannizzaro scored her first goal of the season to put the icing on the cake and bring the victory to 5-0. SCAD outshot Florida Memorial with a staggering 31-5.
The defense also rose to the occasion. Even on this special day, when the fans came out to help celebrate Senior Day, the ladies did not disappoint. They secured their 10th shutout victory of the season. Senior goalie McKenzie Nelson played and got her first win of the season, as well as her first shutout.
Congratulations to the Lady Bees on their victory. And a special congratulations goes to the six seniors who have played their last regular season game with SCAD, including McKenzie Nelson, Hannah Papa, Alex Weinberg, Ryanne Frazier, Sydney Benda and Sofia Bonilla. Thank for your talents, example and performances on and off the pitch.
Next up for the Lady Bees is the Sun Conference Championship. The times and opponents have not yet been determined. However, because of SCAD's impressive season record it is assured that they will play host in the first round of the conference playoffs. Congratulations to the women's soccer team!
