Box Score

The SCAD Women's Soccer team defeated St. Thomas University 3-0 Friday evening. The Lady Bees are now 10-6 overall and 6-2 in the Sun Conference. The shutout victory moved SCAD into sole possession of second place in conference standings.

Coach Rebecca Gunn has really got the Lady Bees on a roll. SCAD has won their last four games in a row and nine out of 10 victories have been shutouts.

The first half of the Friday game was all SCAD as the ladies spent most of their time on the St. Thomas side of the pitch. The passes were crisp and the ball movement was excellent. Meadhbh Deeney scored her sixth goal of the season in the first six minutes of the game to give the women a 1-0 lead in the first half. Twelve minutes later, Olivia Buechler scored her team leading ninth goal of the year. And when the horn sounded to end the half, it looked as if SCAD was well on its way to its 10th win of the season.

But the St. Thomas Bobcats had stronger second half. They came out of the intermission with their claws sharpened. The intensity of the game picked up and the Lady Bees found themselves defending their own goal. This was when goalie Sara Hall and defender Emily Carrol came to the rescue.

Sara Hall had to defend against 14 shots taken in the second half. She worked hard in this contest by saving eight goals in the second period alone and ten total for the game. On one attack from the Bobcats they took three consecutive shots on goal. Hall saved two of them, while Carrol performed a goal line stand by clearing a ball that was just waiting to be sent into the net. It seemed as if the fans were on the edge of their seats for an eternity when that exchange took place, but after Carrol cleared the ball everyone took a deep breath and reassurance was restored.

Deeney's footwork was phenomenal as she controlled the ball and set up her teammates. The Bees added one more score before the final horn sounded. Alex Weinberg gave Kelly McKay a beautiful feed for her fifth assist of the season and McKay does what she does best: score. She placed her seventh goal of the year in the net and the Lady Bees were well on their way to the final 3-0 win. The ladies were able to add a ninth shutout to their victory column.

Only one more regular season game remains for the Lady Bees. It will be Senior Day when they take on Florida Memorial on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. Come out for the final regular season game and help the women honor their senior players.
