W. Soccer Takes a Conference Loss Against St. Thomas

9/27/2013 9:56:00 PM

Box Score

The match was projected to be a close one between two top 25 teams in the NAIA.  The Bobcats of St. Thomas, ranked #17, came into the match with a 5-0-1 record.  The Bees, winners of 4 of their last 5 matches, were out to demonstrate why they hold a #23 NAIA ranking.  The first conference match of the season was destined to be a hard fought battle.

After nineteen minutes of defensive play it seemed that no one was going to get an advantage over the other.  But it was SCAD who drew first blood.  At the 19:44 mark Laerke Michaelsen got a feed from Nikki Wittak and the Bees got on the board.  Eight minutes later Nina Gonzalez gave Eliza Balen a good assist and it looked like the Bees were grabbing momentum with time running out in the half and a 2-0 lead.

With four minutes until the break the Bobcats finally were able to get one by Ande Eich.  Eich had been able to save the previous 4 shots on goal, but the 5th got by her.  The first half ended with the Bees still in the lead at 2-1.

The second half was not a friendly one for the Bees.  St. Thomas came out with a purpose.  Before 2 minutes elapsed on the clock they tied the score at 2-2.  For the next 17 minutes the teams seemed to fall back into the first half strategy of wearing down the opponent.  And sad to say, it was the Bees who finally bent.  Two consecutive late half scores gave the Bobcats a 2 goal advantage.  Time just ran out for SCAD.  Meadhbh Deeney brought the Bees to within one with just over two minutes to play, but SCAD could not get the tying score.

With the loss the Bees fall to 4-4.  The good thing is that the ladies have another conference match literally just around the corner.  The Bees go from Miami Gardens to Miami to take on Florida Memorial.  The Sunday match begins at 2 pm.  Let's go Bees!!
