SCAD Continues Win Streak with 3-2 Win over Webber

9/30/2012 11:35:00 PM

Box Score
Webber International came to the SCAD Sports Complex undefeated at 3-0 in conference play.  The Bees were also undefeated at 2-0, but boasted a five-game winning streak.  The two teams squared off to determine who was going to sit atop the leader board in The Sun Conference.

True to form the match was closely contested as each team sought the advantage, but was unable to penetrate each other's defense.  At the end of the first half of play, the statistics were evenly balanced.  Shots slightly favored the Warriors at 5-3, while saves and corner kicks were even at two.  Neither team could seem to gain an upper hand so at the end of the first period the score was knotted at 0-0.

After the break the Bees appeared to generate an aggressive demeanor.  In the first minute of play Nikki Wittak broke the scoreless affair on an assist by teammate Shelby Dieckamp to give the Bees a much needed goal to take a 1-0 lead.  But before the SCAD fans had time to take their seats the Warriors retaliated with a game tying goal 16 seconds later.  The fight was on.

It was a heartbreaker when three minutes later Webber was able to take the advantage on a score from a corner kick by Ashley Palmer.  It was about 14 minutes into the period that Alexandra Weinberg was a victim of a foul and was given a penalty kick.  Shelby Dieckamp calmly beat the goalkeeper to the left side of the net to tie the score at 2 apiece.

Four minutes later, Wittak once again rose to the occasion.  At the 57:43 mark she received a cross from Dieckamp and placed the ball under the on-rushing goalkeeper to give the Bess the lead again.  However, there were about 32 minutes left in the contest and each team was determined to remain undefeated.  SCAD seemed to get a second wind after Wittak's score and although they could not penetrate the Warriors' defense, they were just as stingy on their own end.  And the score remained at 3-2 when the horn sounded a half an hour later.  SCAD had its 6th straight victory and now sits atop The Sun Conference at 3-0.  It was definitely a hard-fought win.

SCAD's next opponent will be conference rival Johnson and Wales.  The Wildcats will be bringing a 3-4 record and a recent 2-1 victory against Ave Maria to the SCAD Sports Complex on Oct. 5.  The match begins at 5 pm.  Come out and help your Bees go for number seven in a row.
