Bees are victorious over St. Thomas Bobcats

10/3/2011 12:58:00 PM

Miami Gardens, Fla- The Bees held off the Bobcats for tense 1-0 victory on Sunday. SCAD travelled to South Florida to face conference foe St. Thomas University and found themselves in another close match between the two teams. Last year SCAD and St. Thomas tied 1-1 in Savannah and this match looked like it was headed in the same direction. Fortunately a little luck and some excellent goalkeeping helped preserve the seventh shutout of the season and move their conference record to 4-0.
The Bees started well and managed to keep St. Thomas in their own half of the field. In the first minute Shelby Dieckamp and Bethany Ashton combined again to get into the penalty box but a shot was not forthcoming as the ball rolled just out of Ashton's reach. Ashton and Nikki Wittak would also combine a few minutes later but the Bobcats managed to clear the danger. However, in the 8th minute midfielder Sydney Benda would settle the ball in SCAD's half and send a perfectly weighted pass behind the Bobcat defense for Wittak. The sophomore ran onto the ball and held off two defenders as she calm slotted the ball past the on-rushing goalkeeper. It is Wittak's 6th goal in the last 5 games.
After the goal both teams traded a few shots but St. Thomas looked the more dangerous of the two teams. Ciara Thomas made two good saves and came off of her line a couple times to frustrate the Bobcats. In all, Thomas faced two corner kicks and nine shots in the first half.  The Lexington, KY native would have an even better second half as the Bobcats turned up the pressure. She would be aided by the posts twice and had two excellent saves late in the game. Her best save of the game came in the 87th minute when a shot beat her bounced off of the near post across the face of the goal. She quickly got off the ground and dove in front of a lunging attacker to stop the ball on the line. In all, Thomas made seven saves and faced six corner kicks. She also has numerous clearances and was the Bees best player on the day.
SCAD had nine shots and six shots on goal while St. Thomas had fifteen shots and seven shots on goal. The Bees return to action Friday night at 5pm against Warner University in the first game of Parents' Weekend.
