Women's Lacrosse Tops NCAA Division II Wingate in Season Opener

Box Score QUICK SCORE: The SCAD Savannah women's lacrosse team traveled to NCAA Division II Wingate on Sunday for its season opener and won 13-8.
 
RECORDS: The Bees open the season 1-0 while the Bulldogs open the season 0-1.
 
WHAT HAPPENED? Wingate scored the first goal of the game to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Jo Mitchell scores the Bees' first goal to tie the game.
 
Wingate went on to score three unanswered goals (4-1) before Emma Deveraux scored to cut the Bulldog's lead to two (4-2). Wingate scored the last goal of the first half to give them a 5-2 lead going into the second half.
 
SCAD opened the second half with a bang as Sydney Knego, Mitchell and Shannon Flaherty score the first three goals to knot the game at five.
 
Less than a minute after Flaherty's goal, Taylor Vaccaro scores to give the Bees their first lead – a lead they did not relinquish – of the game (6-5).
 
FRESHMAN LEADS THE WAY: Freshman Mitchell led the charge for SCAD with scoring three goals, assisting on three more goals and totaled a game-high five draw controls.
 
OFFENSIVE THREAT: The Bees dominated on offense taking 43 shots to the Bulldogs' 24. Knego tallied three goals and one assist.
 
Vaccaro and Drew Dowgiallo had two goals each with Vaccaro adding two assists and Dowgiallo adding one.
 
Flaherty totaled one goal and one assist while Casey Summerson and Deveraux tallied one goal apiece with Jenna Nabridge adding one assist.
 
DEFENSE: SCAD totaled 15 caused turnovers while Wingate tallied seven with Olivia Stahl causing a game-high seven. Flaherty added three caused turnovers while Deveraux had two.
 
Goalie Maggie Lortz (1-0) earned the win and nabbed eight saves in her 60 minutes of work.
 
DRAW CONTROLS: The Bees out-did the Bulldogs in draw controls as well grabbing 17 to their six. Along with Mitchell's five, Flaherty and Knego totaled four each while Summerson tallied three and Haley McCabe added one.
 
WHAT'S NEXT? No. 1 SCAD returns home to host No. RV Point University on Saturday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m.
