Men’s Soccer Splits Conference-opening Home Games

9/29/2016 1:55:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Heading into the second half of Sunday's match against Florida Memorial down a goal, the prospect of SCAD men's soccer dropping two conference matches at home in three days hung heavy as the afternoon humidity in Hardeeville. Then creativity came calling.

SCAD had allowed an FMU goal in the 17th minute, the result of a failed clearance. With the second half underway and the visitors constructing a defensive shell, the Bees obtained a corner kick. SCAD senior Naim El-Harriti served in the ball, which was handled by an FMU player. SCAD's Tom Rouine tucked away the resulting penalty. Revivified, SCAD nabbed possession following the resulting kick-off, and twenty seconds later freshman JArthur Gibbs turned home an Alejandro Gil pass to put the Bees ahead.

The gasping final minutes, with both teams playing down a man, saw SCAD hold on for the win. It was a crucial result, following Friday's defeat to St. Thomas University, where SCAD had grasped a one-goal lead until late before capitulating in overtime.

With a record of 1-1 in The Sun Conference, SCAD plays their Thursday, September 29 match against Warner University at 4:30 p.m., at the SCAD Athletic Complex in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
