Men’s Soccer Drops Close Game to St. Andrews

Hardeeville, South Carolina – The SCAD men's soccer team couldn't overcome an early deficit as the Bees fell to St. Andrews 2-1 Saturday night at the SCAD Athletic Complex. With the win the Knights improve to 1-0, while the Bees fall to 0-3.

St. Andrews struck first as Paul Tabe sent a header up to Manu Escalera who took the ball down the left side of the field and netted a goal to give the Knights a 1-0 lead six minutes in the contest. St. Andrews threaten to score again but Fernando Zeledon made back-to-back saves to keep the score 1-0. Minutes later, SCAD responded as Alejandro Rodrigez Gil sent a lob shot over the goalie to even the score 1-1. St. Andrews extended their lead to 2-1 as Guilherme Soares headed an Andrew Newman pass into the goal. The Bees tried to even the score before the half but a Francesc Casas header was saved by the Knights goalie to keep the score 2-1 at the break.

SCAD came out strong in the second half outshooting St. Andrews 13-4. In the 56th minute Gonzalo Gelso got behind the Knights back line but his shot ricochet off the post, Willian Santana follow-up was saved by the St. Andrew's goalie. The Bees had another chance in the 68th minute when Naim El-Harriti connected with the back of the net, but an offside call negated the goal. SCAD had one last chance as a Tom Rouine header sailed over the net in the final seconds of the game for the 2-1 final.

Gil's goal was his first of the season. Zeledon finished with five saves. 

The Bees will return to the pitch Saturday when they host Tennessee Wesleyan at 4 p.m. at the SCAD Athletics Complex. Webber will host St. Andrews in the other game of the SCAD Tournament at 2 p.m. Livestats will be available for both games here.
