Box Score Wingate, North Carolina – In a game that saw eight ties and seven lead changes that top-rank SCAD women's lacrosse team fell to Wingate 17- 15 Wednesday afternoon at Graham Gill Field. With the win the Bulldogs improve to 6-3, while the Bees fall to 8-1.
Wingate struck first as Madison LaBarbera netted a goal to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. SCAD responded a minute later as Emma Devereaux converted a free position shot to even the score 1-1. Wingate score two goals, before Shannon Flaherty connected with Joanna Ehatt and Danni Cox for goals to tie the game 3-3 midway through the first half. Wingate would score two of the next three goals to take a 5-4 lead with 11:26 remaining in the opening period. Taylor Vaccaro netted back-to-back goals to give the Bees their first lead of the game. After a Wingate goal, Torii Clark's free position shot found the back of the cage to give the Bees a 7-6 lead with 6:13 remaining. The Bulldogs responded scoring four unanswered goals to end the first half with a 10-7 lead.
The Bees came out firing in the second half controlling the pace right from the opening draw. Two minutes into the half Kirsten Carr and Flaherty ran a give and go for a goal to cut the deficit to 10-8. Devereaux and Flaherty netted back-to-back goals to even the score 10-10 with 24:12 remaining in the second half. Less than a minute later Drew Dowgiallo picked up the ground ball off a Vaccaro shot and connected with the back of the cage. After two Wingate goals, Flaherty found Dowgiallo cutting towards the cage for a goal to tie the game 12-12. Vaccaro, Devereaux, and Cameron Dolan scored the next three goals to the Bees a 15-12 advantage with 10:52 remaining in the second half. Wingate scored four straight goals over the course of the next four minutes to take a 16-15 lead with 7:38 left. SCAD had several chance to tie the game but Arion Pierre made three of her 15 saves to keep the score 16-15. The Bulldogs added a goal with 28 seconds left for the 17-15 final.
Leading the way for the Bees was Flaherty who netted a goal and dished out four assists. Vaccaro, Devereaux, and Dowgiallo each finished with a hat trick. Devereaux picked up five draw controls, while Clark picked up four draw controls and three ground balls. Tori Alexander led the Bees with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
SCAD will return to the field Saturday, April 2, when they travel to West Point, Georgia to face Point University at 4 p.m. Live video will be available here.
