Bees Go Double Overtime in 2-2 Tie with Milligan

9/13/2014 4:04:00 PM

Box Score

An undefeated Milligan College team brought its 2-0 record to the SCAD Athletics Complex in Hardeeville, South Carolina, to play the SCAD Bees team. The men's team has been strong in defense. In its first three games of the season the men have given up a very stingy total of four goals.

When the Buffaloes of Milligan scored their first goal in the first three minutes of the game, it looked as if SCAD's work was cut out for them. But they kept their defensive presence.

The game went up and down the pitch with both teams playing aggressively, but not scoring. Shots in the first period were fairly close with SCAD getting the nod at 7-5, but the shots on goal were a different matter.  Of SCAD's seven shots, four were on goal that required saves by the Buffalo goalie.  Only one of the five Milligan shots in the first period found its mark, with the rest going wide. This is a testament to the hard defensive play the Bees demonstrate.

The first period ended with Milligan leading 1-0. The second period's action ramped up as the Bees outshot Milligan 10-5. Two of those shots — within six minutes of each other - gave SCAD a 2-1 lead.  The first was scored by Sergi Sauras (B.A., architecture) on an assist by Torin Melville (B.A., industrial design). The second goal was a result of a penalty shot by Jordan Trinci-Lyne (undeclared) — also his second goal of the season.

The defense on both teams also escalated with the players really battling up and down the field.  There were 21 fouls called and six yellow cards handed out.  It looked as if the Bees would hold on to get the victory until the 5:42 mark in regulation play. It was then that the Buffaloes struck pay dirt . The team was able to deflect a shot off a SCAD defender in front of the net to score the tying goal.  Both teams battled in the two 10-minute overtimes, but neither could find the goal.  The final 2-2 score resulted in a tie. The tie brings SCAD's record to 1-2-1 for the season.

The Bees next game is set for Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. The men will play their first conference game when they travel to Lakeland, Florida, to take on Southeastern.
