The SCAD Bees' Men's Lacrosse Team faced a team that they will be sure to face once more in the SELC playoffs. Elon University entered this afternoon's competition 0-0 having only played 1 scrimmage, which does not count on their overall record. Elon is not a team of which SCAD is unfamiliar. Entering this afternoon's game the Bees knew that they would need their "A" game to come out with a victory. It was not to be.
It started well as the Bees took a 2-1 lead on goals by Sean Horsey and
Justin McGinnis, but that was short-lived. The Phoenix came back in a flurry and at the end of the first quarter they had a 6-4 lead. The second quarter saw Elon score 5 more goals to increase its lead at intermission to 11-6. SCAD was playing catch-up for the remainder of the game.
In spite of SCAD's
Justin McGinnis scoring a total of 4 goals in the match and
Evan Ruszala having 3 assists, the Bees had difficulty slowing the constant Pheonix attack on the other end of the field. The Bees were outscored every quarter with the exception of the final quarter, but the 3-2 difference in that one quarter was not enough to make up the 6-goal deficit. As a result, the Bees lost their first match of the 2014 season 11-16, falling to 4-1 overall, but still leading its conference with a 2-0 record.
It was a day that the Bees were outplayed by a more aggressive Elon team. The Bees were outshot 41-21, lost 14 of 23 face-offs, had 4 less ground balls and 1 less save, and spent most of the match on the defensive. It was just one of those games where the Bees were outplayed; however, in context of the way the season has gone thus far, it seems that this game is an exception to the rule. The Bees had an off day in competition, but it has been the only one thus far in this young season.
SCAD now takes off on a series of 5 away games. They travel first to Woodstock, Georgia to play Reinhardt University on 2/28. They do not return home again until 4/5 when they take on conference rival Georgia Southern. Things are still good and the Bees will be coming on strong once again in the coming days to make thrust for post-season play. Let's go Bees.
