Trinci-Lyne OT Goal Sends SCAD to Conference Finals

Box Score

The SCAD Men's Soccer team kept up their clean sheet work with another shutout. Last night in The Sun Conference Championship semifinals, the Bees added their ninth shutout to their record by beating Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) 1-0. This time the win came in sudden death overtime.

After 90 minutes of regulation, the game was scoreless. No team could penetrate the opponent's defense. Of the 31 shots taken in the game (Embry-Riddle with seven; SCAD with 24) only eight were on goal (Embry with two; SCAD with six). This indicates a strong defensive inner circle from both teams.

When regulation ended the teams took a 10-minute break to get ready for the overtime play. Coach Tom Melville and Assistant Coach Danny Sonner provided inspiration and encouragement to their players. Before the clock counted down four minutes, the Bees had their win.

The goal was scored by Jordan Trinci-Lyne, who always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Teammates Jake Prescott and Taylor Katsanis combined on the assist to Trinci-Lyne. Prescott began the final play of the game when he kicked a left to right, a 30-yard crossing shot to Katsanis who had slipped by his defender. After receiving the pass, just to the right of the goal, he was double teamed. But he managed to give a touch to Trinci-Lyne in front of the ERAU goalkeeper. That was all it took as Trinci-Lyne hit the back of the net for the 1-0 overtime win.

The fans, coaches, teammates stormed the pitch in celebration, but had a hard time catching Trinci-Lyne who was running around pumping his fist in a victory run. It was not just his victory, but a real team victory where every SCAD player could claim a part in the Bees' ninth shutout of the season.

Perhaps no one was happier than SCAD goalie Fernando Zeledon, who was goalkeeping for all of those nine shutouts. Zeledon lowered his goal against average to a miniscule 0.290, which leads the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). After losing its first two games of the 2014 season, the Bees now have run off 15 straight games without a defeat.

A good night's sleep will be needed as the Bees are back on the pitch tonight for another 7 p.m. game. The opponent will be Thomas University.

The Sun Conference Championship Final will be the only game of the day at the SCAD Athletics Complex. The winner will have the conference title, but will also receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships. Come out and support your Bees!
