Box Score It was one of the toughest, but finest victories of the season for the SCAD Men's Soccer team on Saturday night.
When
Jordan Trinci-Lyne (undeclared) put in a goal at the 29:56 mark in the first period, it seemed that he was destined to be the three time hero for the Bees, having scored the solo goals in their previous two games (1-0 victories over Ave Maria and Warner University).
As it turned out, it wouldn't be that easy. The visiting Webber International University Warriors came out in the second period much stronger. It was reasonable to be anxious about the outcome.
Many of the roughly 450 cheering SCAD fans who attended the game were on the edge of their seat. The Webber team penetrated the Bees defense often and challenged SCAD goalie
Fernando Zeledon (B.A. industrial design). But Zeledon rose to the occasion to save the game.
In the final 18 minutes, Zeledon saved five shots right in his face. Two of those shots came in the final three minutes of the game. Any one of them could have changed the scoreboard, but the Warriors found Zeledon diving to his right and left to stave off those tie-scoring attempts.
It was a sight to behold. Zeledon's job was not over until the last 10 seconds of the game when he deflected his last save and ended up face down in front of the goal as the game-ending horn sounded. The fans screamed out their appreciation of his efforts as the team celebrated this hard fought victory.
The men have won their last three matches by a score of 1-0, all of them conference victories. SCAD now stands at 3-0-1 in the conference standings, second only to the Thomas University Nighthawks who are 4-0. The Bees do not face Thomas University, based in Thomasville, Georgia, until the last game of the season, here at home. If the season continues on this trajectory there could be quite the final game in store for us.
Till then, we will have to wait and see how the season progresses.
