Ga. Gwinnett Hands the Bees Their First Loss of the Season

9/14/2013 2:13:00 AM

Box Score

For twenty-seven minutes of the first half it looked as though the 24th ranked SCAD Bees had come up against a dominating opponent in the Grizzlies of Georgia Gwinnett (4-1).  The team was quick and aggressive.  SCAD found itself down 2-0 and looked as if the score could have been worse.  The Bees were outplayed and spent most of their time defending themselves on their side of the pitch.

Jordan Trinci-Lyne gave the Bees a much needed lift when he penetrated the box at minute 27:34 only to be fouled as he attempted a goal.  The result was a penalty kick that he made good and cut the lead in half.  The score seemed to give the Bees a much needed lift.  Eight minutes later Torin Melville tied the score with a goal on an assist by Trinci-Lyne.

The second half was 45-minutes of back-and-forth.  No team could take advantage of the other.  The Bees' fans were hoping for a result that the women's team had given them just hours before when they pulled out an overtime victory of 3-2.

As Yogi Berra said, "It seemed like déjà-vu all over again" when the horn sounded ending regulation in a 2-2 tie.  Overtime started much the way the second period ended, one team going down the pitch with a determination to bring the game to an end.  But for nearly 8 minutes into the overtime no one could strike the winning blow…until…

The Grizzlies finally were able to hit a soft goal to give the Bees their first loss of the season.  It was a hard fought loss, but a loss just the same.  SCAD just could not penetrate the Grizzlies defense to come up with that decisive goal.  The loss brings their record to 2-1 on the season.

SCAD's next match is an exhibition competition against Middle Georgia on 9/18.  The Bees are once again at home to play at 7pm.  The Middle Georgia match is a good lead-in for SCAD when afterwards they begin conference battles that begin on 9/26.  The Bees play the first of ten straight conference matches when they take on Southeastern University at the SCAD Sports Center at 7pm.  Come out and support your Bees!
