Box Score
Embry-Riddle came to the SCAD Sports Complex with a perfect 8-0 Sun Conference record. Overall they were 10-1 and ranked 11th in the NAIA. And yet the Bees played them goal for goal and shot for shot throughout 90 minutes of regulation play. When the horn sounded ending the regulation period it was anybody's game.
The match did not start well and it certainly did not end well for the Bees. A little over a minute into the match the Eagles scored and it looked like it was going to be a long night for SCAD. But the Bees responded well by spending most of the half on the Eagle's side of the pitch. Defense continued to be a mainstay for SCAD, but the offense could not seem to penetrate the Eagle's defense to the point of getting scoring opportunities. SCAD outshot the Eagles 10 to 5, but only three of those shots were on goal. It was not until
Naim El-Harrati set the stage for an
Alex Jamroz score at the 27:05 mark that SCAD got the fans on their feet. And there were a number of voices in the stands cheering for the home team.
It was Senior Night at the pitch to celebrate the last home game of the regular season for two SCAD players -
Theo Angus and
Jose Izurieta-Herrera. In attendance were 220 fans, among whom were 80 members of the Savannah United Boys Academy. These future soccer stars were all in uniform cheering for the home team and when the tying goal was made everyone got into the spirit. But the half came to a close with no more scoring.
The second half was just as evenly matched as the first. When the horn sounded to end regulation, the statistics for both teams were comparable. SCAD had taken 16 shots – Embry-Riddle had taken 13. Both teams had taken 5 shots on goal. The goalies had each saved four. It came down to who would score first. It was "golden goal" time. Ten minutes were put on the clock to see who would be the first to score. Sad to say, it did not take long. As they did in the first half, the Eagles went on the attack early. In their very first possession, thirty-five seconds into the overtime, Embry-Riddle used two assists to push a score by SCAD's goalie,
Ali Bassir. He found himself protecting the goal against two attackers, but was unable to make his 5th save of the evening. The Bee's had lost a tough one.
The 2-1 loss brought the Bees to a 5-4 conference record with only one more conference match left for the season. SCAD plays an away match at Thomas University on October 30. A win at Thomas University could mean a higher seed in the conference tournament. Let's go Bees!
