Box Score
The SCAD Men's Soccer team defeated Southeastern University Thursday evening in double overtime in Lakeland, Florida by a score of 1-0.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair as each team put pressure on the other's defense. The Bees outshot the Fire 7-2, but only had one shot on goal. The second half saw the Fire put pressure on the Bees. Southeastern had an excellent opportunity to score mid-way through the second half on a breakaway, but the Fire was stopped by SCAD's goalie
Josh Brown, who saved two of the Fire's shots on goal in the period.
As overtime started neither team could solve the others back line of defense. The teams only took one shot apiece with none being on goal so the score remained tied through the first ten-minute overtime.
In the second overtime the Bees' defense played tough. The Fire was unable to get into a position to take a shot at the Bees' goal. With three minutes remaining on the clock SCAD was awarded a free kick just outside the Fire's box.
Richard Langthorne took the free kick from
Luke Baker and hit a rocket that was just out of the reach of the Fire goalkeeper giving the Bees a much deserved 1-0 win.
Coach
Tom Melville had this to say concerning his team's performance, “At times we lost our way and rushed things in the second half. The first period of OT was all SCAD, but it was destined for something special to finish it off and Langthorne obliged.”
The victory for SCAD was the first conference win of the 2012 season. SCAD now stands at 1-0 in The Sun Conference and their overall record improved to 3-3. SCAD continues its conference play on 9/22 when they face off against Ave Maria in Florida.
SCAD will have played three conference matches on the road before they return home to play at the SCAD Sports Complex on 9/30 against another conference rival, Webber International, at 3 p.m.
