Box Score
The SCAD Men's Soccer gave the fans a game that will be remembered for a long time. Down 1-0 to Florida Memorial in the last period of regulation the Bees pulled one out of the hat. With thirty seconds left in the TSC Conference Championship quarterfinal game, the Bees worked the ball up the pitch. With 1 second on the clock
Brinton Nute kicked a desperation shot that caught the right corner of the net to send the 132 SCAD fans into a celebratory frenzy. The Bees had come back from the dead to tie the game and send it into what would result in two scoreless overtimes.
Both teams had fought hard for 110 minutes only to find themselves without a result. Four yellow cards, fifty plus fouls, and numerous time outs for injuries gave evidence that each team knew this could be the last game of the season. The game would hinge upon a tiebreaking shootout.
The tiebreaker came down to five shots rotated among five different SCAD players. The same was true for the Lions of Florida Memorial. It was a sight to behold. That is until the lights went out in South Carolina. SCAD had made three of four shootout attempts. The Lions had made three of three. With the game in the balance the field lights literally went out. The twenty minute wait only enhanced the anticipation of a possible fairy tale ending.
Finally the lights came on and the Florida Memorial player took his shot. It was good. The outcome weighed heavily on William Oswin who confidently sent his shot past the goalkeeper. The shootout was tied now tied at 4 apiece with the Lions having its fifth and final shot. With everyone holding his breath the FMU player placed his kick – and much to the disappointment of the fans who had lined up on the sidelines to cheer its team on the ball sailed past
Josh Brown for the winning score.
It was heartbreaking. The 5-4 shootout in favor of Florida Memorial brought to an end the hopes of the Bees getting to the next round in Sun Conference championship play. But the Bees can hold their heads high. They played their hearts out, but came up a little short. Congratulation still go to
Tom Melville's team for giving us a maximum effort and giving us a season that was full of highlights. We can only hope that next year will provide a different ending.
