Men Fight the Good Fight in 2-1 Loss to Northwood

10/11/2012 7:36:00 PM

Box Score
On paper it seemed that the Northwood Seahawks would have had the advantage coming into the SCAD Sports Complex to play the SCAD Men.  Northwood had the better overall record at 10-2, compared to SCAD's 6-4-1.  They were undefeated in the Sun Conference at 5-0 and were sporting an 8-game winning streak.  But matches are not won on paper.

For the first forty-five minutes of the match, the two teams battled for an advantage.  However, after the first period came to a close the Bees and Seahawks saw no offensive results, at least as far as a goal was concerned.  The score was 0-0.  The highlights of the game were on the defensive end.  The Bees shined brightly in this regard by strongly resisting the Seahawks from making any consistent penetration into the SCAD side of the pitch.  By the end of the game both teams would have accumulated twenty-five fouls, five Yellow Cards, and a Red Card.

The competition was a very intense one, but it was Northwood that drew first blood.  Six minutes into the second period a Northwood goal came indirectly from a free kick that resulted from SCAD's goalkeeper, Josh Brown, coming out to clear a ball and getting tangled with a Seahawk player. The resulting free kick was taken and was unsuccessful, however the ball fell to another Seahawk who shot past Brown for 1-0  at the 53:48 mark.

The score seemed to motivate the Bees.  In a little over a minute later, William Oswin kicked a crossing shot to just inside the box.  Taylor Katsanis headed the ball, but it was deflected to Jordan Trinci-Lyne who put it away to tie the score at 1-1.  Oswin and Katsanis got credit for assisting Trinci-Lynes in getting his fourth goal of the season.

The Bees tried to mount an offensive effort, but they were unable to strike any shots within the box.  Most of the ten shots SCAD took in the second period were from outside the box and therefore were not a serious threat to take a lead.  When the Seahawks scored at the sixty-three minute mark to take a 2-1 lead, it seemed that Northwood had the match secured.

But SCAD had one more push.  In the last minute of the match, the Bees were directly in front of the Seahawks goalie pressing the net.  Two shots were taken, but none could tie the score.  When the horn sounded the Bees had notched a tough second loss in conference play.  The Seahawks increased their record to 11-2 (6-0), while the Bees fell to 6-5-1 (4-2-1).

SCAD takes to the road for their next two matches, Johnson & Wales on 10/13 and Embry-Riddle on 10/17.  They then return home to finish the regular season against Thomas University on 10/23 at 7 p.m.  The final game will be “Senior Night” for the Bees as they honor their six seniors.
