SCAD advances to Sun Conference tournament Finals

11/7/2011 2:36:00 PM

SCAD advanced today, in dramatic fashion, to the Sun Conference tournament finals, held next weekend at St. Thomas University. The Bees appeared to have control of the first 45 minutes at Northwood as they dominated possession through quality passing. Forwards Karl Sjostrom and Jean Morana tormented the Sea Eagles back line. Steven Dowling, the SCAD right back, supplied most of the service to the strikers and Chris Gowar provided quality wing play. Northwood, did manage to hit the crossbar on a long-range effort before the half.

SCAD started the second half without striker, Jean Morana, after he had been injured in the first half. Center back, Brinton Nute, was fortunate to be able to continue as he was kicked in the head on an attempted bike, by a Northwood striker. The dangerous play resulted in a nasty gash and drew a caution card from the referee.

The second 45 began much the way of the first with SCAD getting the better of possessions. As the second half progressed, SCAD appeared to tire and struggle. With 20 minutes to go, the game took a sudden turn as Brinton Nute appeared to have made a timely slide tackle in the SCAD box as the Northwood striker was about to pull the trigger. The referee first signaled a clean tackle as Nute had played the ball, but the linesman flagged Nute for a foul and a resulting penalty. Northwood stepped up and slotted the spot kick to make it 1-0. The SCAD players appeared frustrated by the call.

But SCAD quickly responded by changing tactics and going on the attack with a 3-4-3 formation. With only 55 seconds remaining, Brinton Nute made amends by slipping the ball to Karl Sjostrom who fired his shot home to tie the game and force overtime. The sudden death overtime periods were equally contested, but the game would have to be decided in a penalty shootout.

SCAD stepped up for the first PK and Brinton Nute once again showed his leadership by thumping his PK home. SCAD keeper, Ross Faulds, had a psychological advantage in knowing where the first Northwood striker had put his previous PK and, as a result,  Faulds made a spectacular save pushing the shot onto his right post and denying the first Northwood PK.  SCAD 1 - 0 Northwood. Richard Langthorne took the second SCAD kick and left no doubt in his powerful strike into the corner.

Northwood's  second kicker stepped up and was obviously feeling the pressure as he sailed his kick over the bar. 2-0 advantage to SCAD. Jose Izurieta stepped up to take SCAD's third PK and calmly slotted his effort home. The pressure was now on Northwood's third kicker who had to score to keep their hopes alive. Ross Faulds appeared to get into the head of the Northwood player, as he hesitated slightly on his approach. Faulds palmed the shot skywards and confidently caught the ball. SCAD will be going to the Conference Finals for the third year in a row.
