SCAD Men's Soccer vs. Northwood

Men's soccer advances to Sun Conference Final

11/12/2011 6:46:00 PM

The SCAD men's soccer team entered the semi-finals on Friday as the fifth seed to take on the number one seed, St Thomas Bobcats. Coach Melville wanted another shot at the two teams that had beaten him in the regular season, #4 seed Northwood and #1 St. Thomas. Melville felt that he had a weakened squad against Northwod on Oct. 28th, in the 0-1 loss on OT. He also felt that several game changing decisions by the official helped St Thomas clinch the game back in October. This is the play-offs, however, and SCAD had already redeemed themselves against Northwood in the quarter-final game on PK's. Friday's semi-final was now an opportunity to see off St Thomas.

The Bees started well and earned a Penalty in the 12th minute when Jean Morana was upended in the box. Brinton Nute stepped up and slotted home the PK to put the Bees ahead 1-0. The Bees did not sit back but continued to take the game to the Bobcats. The second goal came when Jean Morana put Karl Sjostrom through and he slipped the ball past the St Thomas Keeper. There were more goals to come in the first half when Ryan Middleton headed though a pass to Karl Sjostrom to hammer home the Bees third goal. The Bobcats appeared stunned and had no answer for the Bees.

The second half witnessed a short lived revival for St Thomas as there were a flurry of SCAD fouls and cards in the first five minutes. A lapse of discipline by the Bees Jean Morana, resulted in him being shown a Red card, for dissent, by the official. This gave the Bobcats an opportunity to get back in the game, especially with 40 minutes remaining! The Bees, however, did not get rattled and retreated into a counter attacking, defensive shell. The Bobcats were limited to several long range efforts as the Bees maintained their discipline defensively. Several more scoring opportunities opened up as the Bobcats were exposed in the back. Karl Sjostrom caused havoc for the Bobcat's defenders for most of the second half but it was Theo Angus who put some icing on the win with a fourth goal. On this occasion it was Sjostrom's turn to be the provider when he slipped Angus through on the left side, after drawing the Bobcat's two center backs. Angus calmly beat the advancing Bobcat Keeper to make it 4-0. The Bees were home and dry. St Thomas simply had no answer today for the Bees as SCAD now advances to meet ERAU in the Sun Conference final at 2pm on Saturday.
