SCAD Men's soccer team (6-5-2 5-1-2) used a late second half goal to edge the No. 21 ranked Eagles of Embry-Riddle (10-4-1 6-2-0), 1-0.
Monday night witnessed the long awaited make-up game between the SCAD Bees and ERAU Eagles in Daytona beach. The Eagles pressed the Bees with their 4-3-3 offensive formation from the outset and seemed to spread SCAD out somewhat in the opening minutes. At the 10-minute mark, Coach Melville made a tactical change away from his opening 4-3-3 formation, to match the Eagles, to a more traditional 4-4-2. This had an immediate impact on the game, taking away the width advantage that the Eagles appeared to have. The remainder of the first half witnessed both teams feeling each-other out and only created a few first-half chances. Exceptional play by SCAD's goalie
Ross Faulds kept the game scoreless throughout the first half.
Both teams went to the locker room to consider how to take an advantage in this defensive battle.
The Bees appeared to start the second half with renewed vigor and quickly set about denying the Eagels any meaningful penetration into the Bees half of the pitch. SCAD mounted a series of tidy combinations, one of which saw
Theo Angus get in behind the Eagles defense and strike a low shot to the back post. The Eagles keeper managed to parry this just past the post. It seemed that SCAD had a great opportunity at the 9-minute mark in the 2nd half when they got three shots on goal in a 40-second sequence. But the Eagles were able to stave off the Bee's offensive assault. Steven Dowling came the closest to scoring when a close shot was saved on the line and deflected onto the post for yet another corner.
It was at the 19th minute that the Eagles were assessed a red card. Center back
Richard Langthorne was given the opportunity of a direct kick just inches outside the 18-yard box. Finesse is usually required from this close range with so many defenders between the ball and the goal, but not this time. Center back,
Richard Langthorne, stepped up to drill the shot into the top left corner. The powerful strike almost tore the "D" stanchion from the post itself. The Bees had their well deserved goal.
Momentum then shifted to the Bees as they denied the Eagles any real threat to score for the remainder of the match. The SCAD forwards strategically ran the clock down by taking the ball into the Eagles corner, gaining a series of corner kicks.
Ryan Middleton and
Theo Angus frustrated the Eagles defenders by taking several short corners. The Eagles were only able to garner two shots on goal for the remaining 25 minutes of play. During the remaining 18 minutes, the Eagles mounted a few counter attacks and worked tirelessly with only ten men due to the red card assessed earlier, but the Bees were too much for them.
The match was a hard fought defensive gem that resulted in 20 fouls, 5 yellow cards, 1 red card, and a hard fought victory for the Bees. Congratulations go to
Tom Melville and the SCAD Bees for keeping their championship hopes alive.
SCAD will be back in action Friday, October 28, at noon against Northwood University at the SCAD Athletic Complex.
