MIAMI – St. Thomas (Fla.) University scored three times in the second half, including twice from Jonathan Rico, as the Bobcats held on for a 3-2 victory over SCAD Savannah in the title match of the 2010 The Sun Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday (Nov. 13) afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Field.
The Bobcats, who were the No. 1 seed in the tournament, improved to 11-5-2 and earned the conference's automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship, which begins next week. The Bees, who are ranked No. 14 nationally and seeded second in the tournament, fell to 14-4-0 and now will have to wait until Sunday (Nov. 14) to see if they will earn an at-large berth to nationals.
SCAD took a 1-0 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the first half on a free kick from Jose-Izurieta-Herrera. The Bobcats tied the match as Rico's goal in the 66th minute off an assist from Guilerme Huaman. St. Thomas took the lead for goal 12 minutes later on a Mike Hinden goal. The Bobcats added an insurance goal in the 81st minute from Rico to push the lead to 3-1. The Bees closed the margin to 3-2 with just over a minute remaining in regulation on
Sebastien Anzevui's free kick goal.
