BABSON PARK, Fla. – SCAD Savannah clinched at least a share of its first-ever The Sun Conference men's soccer title with a 2-1 victory over Webber International University Sunday (Oct. 24) afternoon at Warriors Field.
The 14th-ranked Bees improved to 13-3-0 overall and to 8-1-0 in the conference with the win in their regular-season finale. The 13 wins for the Bees ties a university record for wins in a season. Webber International falls to 3-10-1 and 3-5-0.
The Bees leads The Sun by a half-game over St. Thomas (Fla.) University, which has one conference match remaining. A loss by St. Thomas in that match would give the Bees the conference title outright. A St. Thomas victory would give the Bobcats a share of the conference title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament which begins Nov. 6. St. Thomas would get the nod over the Bees since they defeated SCAD 2-1 in double overtime earlier this season. In either case, the Bees earned a bye in the first round of the tournament and will next host a semifinal-round match Nov. 10 at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
The conference title was the overall 16th in the history of the athletics program. It was just the second won by a men's sport, joining the men's golf team who won the 2007 title.
“I am extremely proud of our entire squad and their accomplishments thus far,” said head coach
Tom Melville. “It is ironic that we clinched the title at Webber (International)'s field as it was the site of my renewed commitment to the team at the end of my first season at SCAD (in 2008).
“That commitment was to recruit the best and develop them to their full potential,” added Melville. “I am particularly pleased for
Matt Dwyer,
Ellert Hreinsson,
Miles Gallagher and
Ross Faulds, who were present that day two years ago. It was a true squad effort this weekend as we were without Pato (Torello), (Sebastien) Anzevui, (Jose) Izurieta and (Theo) Angus who were all injured. This has been a great journey and we have still to write a few chapters. We could not have achieved this without the devoted efforts of (assistant) Coach (Rob) Weisel and (athletic trainer) Jared Luke”
The Bees jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the fifth minute as
Jean Morana's eighth goal of the season off an assist from Hreinsson. SCAD doubled its lead in the 55th minute as Hreinsson scored his team-leading 18th goal as he knocked in a rebound off
Ryan Middleton's initial shot. The Warriors got a goal back in the 70th minute on a score by Miguel Otero, but they couldn't get any closer as SCAD goalkeeper
Ross Faulds stopped six shots.
