DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University and the Savannah College of Art and Design battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw in the 2009 The Sun Conference Men's Soccer Tournament championship match Friday (Nov. 13) evening at the ERAU Soccer Stadium.
The 18th-ranked Eagles advanced to the NAIA National Championship, which begins Nov. 21, with a 4-2 decision in penalty kicks over the 24th-ranked Bees. Embry-Riddle, which advanced to the title match by virtue of penalty kicks over St. Thomas (Fla.) University in the semifinals, improved to 12-3-4 while the Bees fell to 12-3-3 and likely saw their season come to an end.
SCAD had two chances in the first half on breakaways, but couldn't finish those opportunities. The Bees, who held a 10-3 advantage on shots on goal, took a 1-0 lead on
Ryan Middleton's fourth goal of the season at the 48:10 mark. Middleton's strike came from the top of the box.
The Eagles got the equalizer 12 minutes later on a laser from just outside the box that SCAD goalkeeper
Robbie Wright got his hands on the ball, but couldn't knock it away. The match would remain tied through the remainder of regulation and two 10-minute halves of sudden-death overtime to force the penalty kicks.
The Bees won the toss and elected to go first in the penalty kicks.
Richard Langthorne's attempt for SCAD sailed over the goal while Michael Donald converted his opportunity to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. SCAD's
Ellert Hreinsson and Embry-Riddle's J.L. Wilson each made their penalty kicks in the second round.
Middleton had a chance to tie the score for the Bees but ERAU goalkeeper Viktor Bergstrand stopped Middleton's shot that was low and to the left. Ryan Maloney followed for the Eagles and converted his kick to give Embry-Riddle a 3-1 lead.
Brinton Nute converted his chance for the Bees to trim the lead to 3-2, but Matthias Klatt closed out the win by knocking in his penalty kick.
