Men take 2nd Place; Women 6th Place At NAIA Nationals

The NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships, held from March 5 to March 8 in Elkhart, Indiana, provided an exhilarating platform for talented collegiate athletes. The SCAD swim teams showcased remarkable skill and determination, with the men's team finishing in second place overall and the women's team securing a commendable sixth place. 

Men's Swimming Highlights 

The SCAD men's swimming team delivered an outstanding performance throughout the championships, highlighted by several key individual and relay events. 

Relay Events 

  • 400 Freestyle Relay: The team of Jake Litchfield, Zoltan Tompos, Kevin Keil, and Jan Gastal finished in fourth place. Their combined efforts demonstrated strong teamwork and speed, setting a solid foundation for the team's overall performance. 

  • 200 Freestyle Relay: In another relay event, the team comprising Gastal, Litchfield, Tompos, and Sam Carlson secured the silver medal, finishing in second place. This result showcased their exceptional sprinting capabilities and cohesion as a unit. 

  • 400 Medley Relay: The relay team of Gastal, Naz Sementsov, Dario Rukavina, and Bo Kasten earned a bronze medal, placing third. Their performance reflected strategic pacing and strong strokes across all four disciplines. 

Individual Events 

  • 1650 Freestyle: A highlight of the championships was the exceptional performance by Kevin Keil, who took home gold in this grueling event. His victory in the 1650 Freestyle solidified his status as one of the top distance swimmers in the NAIA. 

  • 400 Individual Medley: Keil continued to shine, winning another gold medal, showcasing his versatility across different strokes. 

  • 500 Freestyle: In a fiercely competitive race, Keil added to his accolades by finishing in second place, claiming the silver medal in this event. 

  • 200 Butterfly: Bo Kasten represented SCAD well, earning a bronze medal, demonstrating his prowess in butterfly technique. 

  • 100 Butterfly: Kasten continued his strong showing with another bronze medal, finishing third. 

  • 200 Freestyle: Jan Gastal finished commendably, taking fourth place while Zoltan Tompos followed closely behind in sixth place. 

  • 200 Backstroke: Dario Rukavina finished in sixth place, contributing valuable points to the overall team score. 

  • 200 IM: Kasten ended his individual events with an eighth-place finish, rounding out a strong performance in multiple events. 

  • 100 Freestyle: Gastal also competed in the 100 Freestyle, finishing in eighth place. 

Overall, the men's team demonstrated exceptional depth, skill, and determination, culminating in a strong second-place finish in the overall standings. 

Women's Swimming Highlights 

The SCAD women's team also showcased remarkable talent and resilience, finishing sixth overall in a highly competitive field. 

Relay Events 

  • 200 Freestyle Relay: In another relay event, the women's team finished in fifth place, with Cayla, Alexander, Givens, and Hahn again contributing to a strong showing. 

  • 400 Medley Relay: The relay team of Cayla, Alexander, Rocio Monge, and Nikki Hahn finished third, earning a bronze medal for their impressive performance. 

  • 200 Medley Relay: The women's team achieved another bronze meda, with Cayla, Alexander, Monge, and Hahn demonstrating impressive coordination and speed. 

Individual Events 

  • 200 Breaststroke: Nikki Hahn earned a bronze medal, showcasing her strength and technique in this challenging event. 

  • 100 Breaststroke: Hahn continued her successful run by finishing in second place, claiming a silver medal and adding significant points for her team. 

  • 200 Backstroke: Rachel Dawson swam her heart out, finishing in seventh place, while Leah Givens contributed valuable points with a solid performance in the same event. 

  • 100 Butterfly: Rocio Monge finished in sixth place, while the team benefited from her speed and skill. 

  • 200 IM: Nikki Hahn also participated in the 200 IM, finishing in eighth place, rounding out a strong individual performance over the championships. 

Overall, the SCAD women's team demonstrated resilience and teamwork, culminating in a commendable sixth-place finish in the national standings. 

Records Broken 

The championships were not only marked by impressive performances but also by several school records broken by SCAD athletes: 

  • Men's 200 Freestyle Relay: The team set a new school record with a time of 1:20.99. 

  • Men's 400 Medley Relay: Another school record was established by the relay team with a time of 3:16.80. 

  • Women's 400 Medley Relay: The women's team also set a new school record, finishing the event in 3:48.75. 

  • Men's 100 Butterfly: Bo Kasten etched his name in the record books with a school record time of 47.74. 

  • Women's 100 Breaststroke: Nikki Hahn set a new school record with her impressive time of 1:01.21. 

  • Men's 200 Butterfly: Kasten further distinguished himself by breaking the school record with a time of 1:47.49. 

These records highlight the exceptional talent and hard work of the SCAD athletes and mark a significant achievement for the program.
