No. 9 Men’s Lacrosse Opens Season at NCAA DIII Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The No. 9 SCAD men's lacrosse team opened the 2025 season at NCAA DIII Southern Virginia University on Saturday, falling 16-13.
 
RECORDS: The Bees are now 0-1, while the Knights open the season 1-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: Southern Virginia struck first, just under three minutes into the game, to go up 1-0. Back-to-back SCAD goals from Sebastian Manuel gave the Bees their first lead of the game (2-1).
 
Mason Hickman and Jonathan O'Bryant Graves (2) scored a combined three goals to finish the first quarter up 4-3 over the Knights.
 
Manuel opened the scoring in the second quarter to extend SCAD's lead to 5-3. However, Southern Virginia scored three consecutive goals to go up 6-5 before Noah Moreland (2) and Hickman brought the score to 8-6 in favor of the Bees.
 
Unfortunately, the Knights scored three unanswered goals at the end of the second quarter to take a 9-8 lead into halftime.
 
SCAD's Manuel scored the first goal of the third quarter to knot the game at nine-all, but Southern Virginia answered with two more to go up 11-9. Hickman and Theron Turnbull scored to tie the game for the seventh time heading into the final quarter.
 
Hickman scored his fourth and fifth goals of the game in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough, as the Knights scored five goals to earn the 16-13 win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Sebastian Manuel and Mason Hickman led the offensive charge for the Bees as Manuel totaled four goals and three assists for a game-high seven points, and Hickman totaled five goals.
 
Noah Moreland totaled two goals and one assist, while Jonathan O'Bryant Graves had one goal and two assists, with Theron Turnbull adding one goal.
 
Lucas Martinez went 21-31 at face-off off, while goalie Noah Miller totaled 17 saves in his 60 minutes of work.
 
Theron Turnbull, Gordon Beck, and David Nebus totaled two caused turnovers each.
 
WHAT'S NEXT? The Bees will remain on the road to face NCAA DII Pfeiffer on Friday, Feb. 7 at 5:00 p.m.
