SCAD Women’s Soccer Falls in Hard-Fought Road Battle at Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The SCAD women's soccer team showed grit and determination on the road Tuesday night, but an early goal proved decisive as the Bees fell 1-0 to the University of the Cumberlands at the UC Soccer Complex.

The Patriots struck quickly in the sixth minute when Alba Ramirez scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Nicole Araujo. Cumberlands nearly doubled the lead shortly after with two shots off the woodwork, but the Bees' back line of Emilia Irle, Mina Haggstrom, Elsa Johansson, and Emily Lau settled in to keep the Patriots from extending their advantage. Goalkeeper Saga Bryntesson organized the defense effectively, and SCAD held Cumberlands without a shot on goal in the second half.

From there, the Bees grew into the game and created consistent chances of their own. Mia Gomez was active up front with three shots on goal, while midfielder Ida Akesson added three attempts and freshman forward Vera Wikstroem energized the attack with two shots, including one that forced a diving save in the 55th minute. Freshmen Cali Wuestefeld and Mia Nelson also threatened, with Wuestefeld's first-half shot forcing another save from Cumberlands goalkeeper Morgan White, who tallied five on the night.

SCAD pushed hard after halftime, outshooting the Patriots 5-2 and holding a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. The Bees maintained pressure until the final whistle, with Gomez nearly equalizing in the 73rd minute, but White stood strong in goal. The closing minutes grew physical, with three yellow cards shown to Cumberlands, but SCAD couldn't find the breakthrough despite controlling possession late.

The Bees finished with a 10-5 shot advantage and showed resilience after the early goal, though the result moves them to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. SCAD will look to turn their strong performance into points as they continue their conference schedule this weekend.
