HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The SCAD women's lacrosse fell 13-12 in overtime against NCAA DII Emmanuel University in the season opener.
RECORDS: The Bees are 0-1, while the Lions are 1-0 to start the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED: SCAD got on the board early with back-to-back goals from
Emma Roch, with the first being assisted by
Ainsley Jones at the 11:25 mark and the second coming just under 10 minutes to give SCAD a 2-0 lead. Neither team scored for the rest of the quarter, and the Bees went into the second up by two.
Emmanuel tied it at two with two quick goals in the second quarter. However, SCAD outscored the Lions 3-1 – goals from
Annise Berkeley,
Molly Wilson, and
McKinsey Brown – in the remainder of the second quarter to go into the half up 5-3.
In the third quarter, Emmanuel scored first to come within one (5-4) at the 14:17 mark, but SCAD answered not even a minute later when
McKinsey Brown scored her second goal of the game to go up 6-4.
The Bees totaled four more goals in the quarter from
Annise Berkeley (3) and
Molly Wilson to give SCAD a 10-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lions scored the first three goals of the fourth to come within one (10-9). Defender
Grace Gibson scored her first collegiate goal with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Unfortunately, Emmanuel totaled three more goals to take a 12-11 lead with 2:36 remaining in regulation.
MaryGrace Gordon tied the game at 12-all with 48 seconds remaining on the clock. Neither team scored for the rest of the fourth, forcing overtime.
Just over a minute into the overtime period, the Lions scored to end the game 13-12.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Annise Berkeley led the offense with four goals while
Molly Wilson,
Emma Roch, and
McKinsey Brown totaled two each, with Wilson and Brown adding one assist.
Grace Gibson and
MaryGrace Gordon totaled one goal each.
Goalie
Lorna Fowles totaled a career-high 19 saves in just under 50 minutes of work. Fowles totaled four ground balls as well.
Annise Berkeley and
Emma Roch totaled a team-high five draw controls, with
Eden Ali and
Grace Gibson totaling three caused turnovers each.
