Women's Soccer Advances to NAIA Quarterfinals

PENSACOLA, FLA. - The ninth seeded SCAD women's soccer team punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over eighth seeded Spring Arbor University on Monday afternoon. 

RECORDS: The Bees improve to an impressive 17-1-2 on the season, while Spring Arbor concludes their campaign at 18-5-0. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: SCAD dominated the statistical landscape, outshooting Spring Arbor 14-7 and maintaining possession for much of the match. The game's lone goal came in the 44th minute when Mia Gomez scored her first goal of the tournament, assisted by Sydney Chura. The goal proved to be the decisive moment in a tightly contested match. 

The first half saw SCAD create numerous scoring opportunities, recording 11 shots compared to Spring Arbor's zero. Goalkeeper Saga Bryntesson was nearly untested, while Spring Arbor's Reagan Kohler made seven crucial saves to keep her team within striking distance. Key moments included Sydney Chura hitting the crossbar in the ninth minute and multiple close-range shots that were saved or went wide. 

The second half saw Spring Arbor come alive offensively, registering seven shots, but they were unable to break through with SCAD securing the victory. 

KEY PERFORMERS: 

  • Mia Gomez: Scored the game-winning goal in her limited 32 minutes of play 

  • Sydney Chura: Provided the crucial assist and created multiple scoring opportunities with six shots 

  • Saga Bryntesson: Recorded three saves and a clean sheet in the tournament match 

WHAT'S NEXT: The Bees advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday, December 5th at 10:00 a.m. CST and will face the 16th seed John Brown University.
