QUICK HIT: The nationally ranked No. 5 SCAD women's tennis team defeated No. 21 Southeastern University 5-0 in the first-round of The Sun Conference Championships on Thursday.
DOUBLES ACTION: The Bees led 3-0 at the completion of doubles winning 8-1 and 8-2 at number one (Sukkanha/Weber) and number two (Morrissey/Tobrand) doubles, respectively.
Valerie Droop and
Nicole Katzarkov went up 6-4 at number three doubles but the Fire took a 7-6 lead before SCAD tied it at 7-7 to force the tiebreaker. The Bees stayed strong and won the tie-break 7-3 to give SCAD the 3-0 lead going into singles.
SINGLES ACTION: Katzarkov and
Tova Tilk Tobrand clinched the match for the Bees winning 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 at numbers six and five singles, respectively.
As the conference tournament is the first to five, the remaining four singles matches were unfinished.
Priya Sukkanha was winning 6-0, 5-1 at number one singles while
Haley Morrissey was winning 6-3, 1-2 at number two singles.
Eika Johanna Weber was up 6-3 at number three singles and Droop was winning 6-3, 3-1 at number four singles when the match was decided.
COACH O: "The ladies did a fabulous job of implementing tactics from practice into their doubles today" states Head Coach
Ken Obermeier. "Winning all three doubles matches was key as the momentum carried over into singles. Everyone played great and we were able to win the first set in every match and had Nicole and Tova seal the victory ahead of their teammates. We are excited to play again tomorrow."
