Tennis Has Strong Showing at ITA Regionals

QUICK SERVE: The SCAD men's and women's tennis teams traveled to Delray Beach, Fla. for the ITA Small College Regional Championships hosted by Keiser University on Sept. 26-28th.

CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT: The tournament for both doubles and singles featured bracket-style double -elimination play.

MEN'S DOUBLES: Eloy Veloso and Nicola Buffo teamed up and earned a bye in the first round and then fell 8-6 in the second to Coastal Georgia's Figure/Jamella 8-6.

WOMEN'S DOUBLES: Priya Sukkanha and Eika Johanna Weber earned the No. 1 ranking to start doubles action. After earning a bye in the first round, Sukkanha and Webber defeated Coastal Georgia's Napier/Campo 8-5. In the quarterfinals, the duo faced St. Thomas's Carrer/Pena and won 8-6 to advance to the semifinals. Sukkanha and Weber lost 8-5 to Keiser's Gabriel/Ruyssen 8-5 in the semifinals.

Haley Morrissey and Haley Tilk Tobrand earned the No. 4 ranking and a bye in the first round. In the second round they faced Warner's Santiago/Kamoi and came out on top by a score of 8-0. Unfortunately, Morrissey and Tobrand fell 8-4 to Keiser's Gabriel/Ruyssen in the quarterfinals.

Valerie Droop and Nicole Katzarkov defeated Coastal Georgia's Rubio/Landi 8-3 in the first round but then fell 9-8 (3) to Southeastern's Letizia/Riccardo.

MEN'S SINGLES: Buffo defeated St. Thomas's Fabrice Bissainthe 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. Buffo won in the second round by defeating Coastal Georgia's Adrian Fleck 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 to face Keiser's Linus Fleck in the third round where he fell 6-1, 6-0.
Veloso faced Southeastern's Felipe Barbosa and lost 6-2, 6-4 in the first round.
WOMEN'S SINGLES: Sukkanha earned the No. 1 ranking and bye in the first round of singles. In the second round, the sophomore defeated Keiser's Joyce Nouws 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. Sukkanha faced Keiser's Anais Ruyssen next and won 6-2, 6-2. In the semifinals, Sukkanha fought hard but ultimately, fell 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to the No. 4 seed from Keiser – Sarah Schaerer.

Morrissey won the first round against Ave Maria's Katina Carlos 6-0, 6-0 but fell 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (8) in the second round to St. Thomas's Annie Carrera.

Droop advanced to the third round defeating Keiser's Melanie Dveksler 6-3, 6-2 in the second round after earning a bye in the first. In the third round, Droop fell 7-5, 6-3 to Lia Pena, the No. 3 seed from St. Thomas.
Weber defeated Ave Maria's Nadia Mangelsdorf 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the second round where she was defeated 6-3, 6-3 by Keiser's Lisa Khamassi.

Tobrand won in straight sets in the first round against Ave Maria's Averie Harkey. In the second round, Tobrand fell to Coastal Georgia's Eva Rubio 7-5, 6-2.

Katzarkov defeated her first round opponent, Webber's Lily-Rose Rochat, 6-1, 6-2 and then ;pst 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (6) in the second round to Southeastern's Sharienne Ricardo.

COACH RICHARDSON: "I was pleased with our effort" states Head Coach Worth Richardson. "Ultimately, we had chances in almost every match we lost—which in reality is what we want, opportunities. We just need to get a little better at seizing them."

WHAT'S NEXT? The men's tennis team hits the courts again on Nov. 11-3 for Georgia Southern Championships while the women's team will compete at the Georgia Southern Fall Shootout on Oct. 10-13.
