SAVANNAH, Ga. – SCAD's Athletic Director
Doug Wollenburg is pleased to announce the hiring of Ken Obermeier as the new head men's and women's tennis coach.
Coach Obermeier is a "welcome addition to the SCAD athletics staff as he will provide immediate support and stability for our artist-athletes both on the tennis courts and in the classroom" states Athletic Director Wollenburg. "I am looking forward to working with Coach Obermeier as he has an extensive background in tennis and other administrative roles and he has the strong potential to become a leader amongst his peers within the athletic department. Coach Obermeier will jump immediately into coaching responsibilities for both the men's and women's teams – the women are ranked No. 3 in the NAIA – as well as recruiting and other administration duties."
Obermeier comes to SCAD from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida where he was the assistant men's and women's tennis coach. Here, Obermeier worked directly with the head coach and athletic director to facilitate the progress and success of both NCAA Division II programs. His responsibilities included the managing day to day operations, assisting with the operational and fiscal management, recruiting, conditioning of student-athletes, practice and game-day preparation, fundraising and maintaining positive public relations.
During his time at the Florida Institute of Technology, Obermeier was the 2015 ITA Division II South Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.
Prior to the Florida Institute of Technology, Obermeier was the Tennis Manager at the Genesys Athletic Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan from where he developed four players into the top 100 USTA under-14 national rankings. Obermeier was the City of Palm Coast, Florida Tennis Superintendent from 2006-11 where he was responsible for all operations of the Palm Coast Tennis Center.
Obermeier has also been a USTA Palm Coast Men's Futures Championships Tournament Director as well as the Director of Tennis at the RDV Sportsplex Athletic Club in Orlando, Florida.
Obermeier is a member of the Adidas Tennis National Advisory Staff, Yonex Tennis National Advisory Staff and he is a USTA Midwest Wheelchair Professional the USTA/NEMTA Vice President and a part of the USTA Midwest Coaches Commission.
Obermeier is a 1992 graduate of Illinois State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, Fitness Leadership and Athletic Training..lfdmbd
