Bees Defeat Georgia Southern in Lightening Shortened Game

Hardeeville, South Carolina – The SCAD scored five first quarter goals to propel themselves to a 15-5 win over Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon at the SCAD Athletic Complex. The game was called with 9:14 remaining in the fourth quarter due to lightening.

SCAD (6-5) came out strong as Mitch Snider netted an unassisted goal to give the Bees an early 1-0 lead two minutes into the contest. Philip Sussingham and Eric Potts scored back-to-back goals to extend the Bees lead to 3-0 midway through the opening period. Logan Phillips won the faceoff and on the ensuing possession Reid Campbell found Reid Abahazie cutting towards the cage for a goal. Just under a minute left in the quarter Brendan Buckley connected with Potts for a goal to give SCAD a 5-0 lead after the first quarter.

Georgia Southern (3-5) netted back-to-back goals to start the second quarter and cut the lead to 5-2. The Bees responded with goals from Jack Cioffi and James Simmons to take a 7-2 lead with 7:06 remaining. The Bees took advantage of an Eagles penalty as Sussingham found Buckley in front of the cage for a man-up goal. SCAD score two of the final three goals of the half to take a 10-3 lead at the break.

Two minutes into the third quarter play was suspended for 50 minutes due to lightening in the area. After play resumed, Griffin Hunt scored twice to extend the Bees lead to 12-3. The Eagles scored twice before Hunt bounced a shot past the goalie for his third goal of the quarter and give the Bees a 13-5 lead.

Snider won the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter and on the ensuing possession Buckley scored an unassisted goal. The score remained that way until the 9:14 mark when Sussingham found Potts in front of the cage for a goal to give the Bees a 15-5 advantage. The game was called immediately after that goal due to lightening.

Leading the way for the Bees were Buckley and Potts. Buckley netted three goals and dished out three assists, while Potts tallied four goals and one assists. Sussingham, Cioffi, and Hunt each tallied three points as well.

Connor Goonan made seven saves in the first half to improve to 6-5 on the season. Connor Keehn played the second half in the cage and made three saves.

SCAD won 16 of the 23 faceoffs in the game, led by Phillips who went 12-17 and picked up a team high seven ground balls.

The Bees will return to action Friday, April 1, when they host conference rival Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. Livestats will be available here.
