Box Score Hardeeville, South Carolina - The SCAD men's lacrosse team scored nine first half goals, but it wasn't enough as the Bees fell to College of Charleston 13-11 in their home opener Saturday afternoon at the SCAD Athletic Complex. With the win the Cougars improve to 1-1 and 1-0 in the SELC, while the Bees fall to 0-2 and 0-2 in the SELC.
College of Charleston struck first, netting a goal on their first possession of the game. Minutes later, Philip Sussingham scored an unassisted goal to even the score 1-1 with 8:43 remaining in the opening period. The Bees took advantage of a Cougars penalty as Griffin Hunt connected with Brendan Buckley for a man-up goal to give SCAD a 2-1 advantage. The two teams traded goals twice before Buckley found Eric Potts in front of the cage for a goal to give the Bees a 5-3 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, SCAD took advantage of a Cougars penalty as Sussingham netted his second man-up goal of the game. College of Charleston scored three of the next four goals to cut the lead to 7-6 with 2:23 remaining. With 44 seconds left in the first half, Griffin Hunt took advantage of a Cougars turnover and scored an unassisted goal. Samuel McDavitt won the ensuing faceoff and on the Bees possession Sussingham found Potts for the goal to give SCAD a 9-6 lead at the break.
College of Charleston outscored the Bees 2-1 in the third period to cut SCAD's lead to 10-8 heading into the final period.
The Bees extended their lead to 11-8 as Potts netted third goal of the game two minutes into the fourth quarter. College of Charleston scored the final five goals of the game for the 13-11 final.
Buckley led the Bees with four points, while both Sussingham and Potts tallied three points apiece. SCAD went 17-28 on faceoffs, led by Mitch Snider who won nine of the 12 faceoffs he took.
Connor Goonan made seven saves in the cage and picked up five ground balls. Connor Summerson and Michael McGee combined for nine caused turnovers and six ground balls. James Simmons picked up a team-high eight ground balls in the contest.
SCAD returns to action Wednesday, February 17, when they host fourth-ranked Reinhardt. The game is slated for 7 p.m. at the SCAD Athletic Complex. Livestats will be available for the game here.
