On October 21, SCAD began its competitive season hosting Gardner-Webb University at a head-to-head meet at Chatham County Aquatic Center. Gardner-Webb edged the SCAD men 86-116, while the SCAD women came up short 66-136.

"The meet against Gardner-Webb was close," said SCAD head swimming coach Bill Pilczuk. "Our men's and women's teams were both beat on depth. The 12-day break caused by Hurricane Matthew put us behind in our training. Our top swimmers did a great job maintaining top fitness during that time, so it was a lesson for the whole team in the importance of doing what it takes to stay in racing shape."

Against Gardner-Webb, SCAD men captured six of nine first place individual races and were 2nd in two more. The ladies won three races and were 2nd in two. Both teams placed just behind GWU in both relays. Men's leaders were Joel Ax (100 free 45.8 and 200 free 1:39.8); Joel Thatcher (400IM 4:09.3 and 500 free 4:41.8); Sam Kim (200IM 2:00.8); and Ryan Sweat (100 fly 52.5). Women's leaders were Julie Woody (50 free 24.0 and 100 free 52.8; and Abigail Richey (200 free 1:55.9).

SCAD Swimming next travels to Atlanta for a Saturday, November 5 meet against Emory. "For half the team, it'll be their first time swimming at Emory's pool, which is a great facility," said Coach Pilczuk. "Every pool's a little different, from the size of the blocks to the depth of the pool to the way the ceiling looks. Swimming in a new pool helps prepare the team for Nationals. We've reset now and we're looking for better results against Emory."
