Savannah, Georgia - Karina Rovira won a three set thriller at number three singles to give the fourth-ranked SCAD women's tennis team a 4-3 win over Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon at Bacon Park. The win is the Bees first win over a Division I school in program history.
SCAD (1-1) struck first as Camille Gbaguidi and Paige Murdock teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles to give the Bees the advantage in doubles. The Eagles responded with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Georgia Southern (1-1) took a 5-2 advantage at No. 2 doubles, but Rovira and Julia Albuquerque rallied to even the score at 7-7. The two teams traded points to force the tiebreaker. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the tiebreaker before the Bees rallied to win the tiebreaker 7-5 to clinch the doubles point for SCAD.
SCAD extended its lead to 2-0 as Gbaguidi won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. The Eagles battled back with straight set wins at No. 2 and 5 singles to even the score at 2-2. Alburquerque picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles to give the Bees a 3-2 advantage.
At No. 6 singles, Daniella Arcila won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 6-1. In the third set Arcila was up 5-3 but Mary Phillips Smith battled back to force a tiebreaker and eventually win the tiebreaker 7-5 to even the score 3-3.
In the deciding match, No. 3 singles, Rovira won the first set 7-6 (7-5). After dropping the second set, Rovira rallied to win the third set 6-3 to clinch the match for the Bees.
The Bees will return to the court Friday, February 12, when they travel to Lakeland, Florida to face Southeastern at 1 p.m. This will be the Bees opening match of conference play.
