Second Quarter Explosion Leads Bees to Win

Box Score Hardeeville, South Carolina – The SCAD men's lacrosse team scored ten second-quarter goals en route to a 17-9 win over Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon at the SCAD Athletic Complex. With the win the Bees improve 3-4, while the Owls fall to 1-6.

SCAD struck first as Nate Travis netted an unassisted goal less than a minute into the contest.  Florida Atlantic responded scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. 

The Bees won the opening faceoff of the second quarter and on the ensuing possession Reed Abahazie found Brendan Buckley cutting to the cage for a goal. Two minutes later Justin McGinnis found James Simmons in transition for a man-down goal to even the score 3-3.  After an Owls goal, Griffin Hunt connected with Buckley to tie the game 4-4 with 10:17 remaining in the first half.  Less than a minute later, Connor Summerson forced a Florida Atlantic turnover and pushed the ball to Buckley who found Abahazie in front of the cage for goal to give SCAD the 5-4 advantage.  The Bees scored four straight goals to take a 9-4 lead with 3:48 left in the half.  Florida Atlantic scored two of the next three goals, before SCAD took advantage of an Owl's penalty as Jack Cioffi connected with Buckley for a man-up goal to give the Bees an 11-6 advantage at the break. 

SCAD continued their attack in the third quarter as McGinnis connected with Hunt for a goal on the Bees first possession.  The two teams traded goals to give SCAD a 13-7 lead after three periods.

The Bees took advantage of a Florida Atlantic penalty as Abahazie connected with McGinnis for a goal two minutes into the fourth quarter.  Minutes later, Hunt found Cody Sienkiewicz cutting towards the cage for a goal to extend the lead to 15-7.  The two teams traded goals twice for the 17-9 final.

Buckley led the Bees tallying four goals and two assists, while McGinnis dished out four assists and netted a pair of goals. Abahazie tallied five points while Cioffi and Hunt each tallied four.  Travis netted a hat trick in the win.

Doug Henry went 15-21 on faceoffs for SCAD.  Summerson finished the day with three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Joe Fortier picked up four ground balls.  Connor Goonan made nine saves in the cage.

The Bees return to action tomorrow when they host Tennessee Wesleyan.  Game is set for 1 p.m. at the SCAD Athletic Complex.
