Two Late First Half Goals Sparks Win

Hardeeville, South Carolina – The SCAD men's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final 15 seconds of the first half to spark the Bees as they defeated St. Andrews University 14-11 Saturday afternoon at the SCAD Athletic Complex. With the win the Bees improve to 1-1, while the Knights drop to 2-1. 

SCAD struck first as Eric Potts connected with Nate Travis for a goal three minutes into the contest.  The Bees won the ensuing faceoff and Potts netted a goal to give SCAD an early 2-0 lead.  St. Andrews responded scoring four unanswered goals to give the Knights a 4-2 lead with 2:49 remaining in the opening period.  SCAD cut the deficit to 4-3 as Brendan Buckley's turnaround shot got past the goalie for a goal.

St. Andrews took advantage of the Bees' penalty as Cha'Sed Miller netted a man-up goal to extend the Knights lead to 5-3.  After the two teams traded goals, Justin McGinnis scored a transition goal to cut the deficit to 6-5 with 3:40 remaining in the first half.  The Bees evened the score with 15 seconds left as Connor Summerson picked up the ground ball, off a Buckley shot, and scooped it into the cage for the goal.  McGinnis picked up the ground ball off the ensuing faceoff and connected with Buckley in front of the cage for a goal to give the Bees a 7-6 advantage at the break.  

SCAD came out firing to start the third quarter, outshooting the Knights 16-7.  Jack Cioffi started the scoring converting a well-placed shot to the top left corner of the cage to extend the Bees lead to 8-6.  The Knights cut the lead to 8-7 as Miller found Nick Foster for the man-up goal with 11:39 remaining. McGinnis responded scoring three straight goals to extend the Bees lead to 11-7 after three periods.

SCAD's hot shooting continued in the fourth quarter as McGinnis netted his fifth goal of the contest.  Minutes later, Nate Travis connected with Cioffi for a goal to give SCAD the 13-7 advantage.  SCAD won the ensuing faceoff and Travis' shot connected with the back of the cage for a goal. St. Andrews scored the final four goals of the game for the 14-11 final.

McGinnis led the Bees with five goals, nine ground balls, and an assist.  Travis and Potts each tallied three points, while Buckley and Cioffi each netted a pair of goals.

Connor Goonan picked up the win in the cage and made ten saves in the process.  Summerson tallied five ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead the Bees backline.

The Bees will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Fort Myers, Florida to face Florida Gulf Coast University.  Game time is set for noon.
