M. Lacrosse Defeats Georgia Southern 19-8

4/7/2014 3:49:00 PM

More than 200 fans turned out to see the Women's and Men's Lacrosse teams play back-to-back games this past weekend.  Both teams honored their graduating seniors and both came away with lopsided victories of 18-7 and 19-8, respectively.

The Men's Team pounded the Georgia Southern Eagles in all categories, but it was the 4th period that put the game completely in the hands of SCAD.  The Bees outscored the Eagles 8-1 in the period and the victory gave the men a 6-5 season to-date.  More importantly, the win capped an undefeated conference play for SCAD.  They finished up at 3-0 with only one more nonconference game remaining on their regular season schedule.

Leading the way in the scoring category for the Bees was sophomore Nate Travis.  Travis recorded a season high 7 goals.  This was quite an offensive display since he only took 10 shots to accomplish this result.  Cody Sienkiewicz and Justin McGinnis both scored 3 goals, Matt Dean and Aaron Farabee contributed 2 apiece.  The other two goals were scored by Tucker Hotte and Andrew Gualtieri.

Freshman Evan Ruszala led in the assist category with 4.  Shawn Horsey was only one behind with 3.  Dylan Weber-Callahan, Farabee, and freshman Sam McDavitt added three more.  Scoring was definitely a team effort with 11 different SCAD players involved with the goals and assists.

The groundballs were greatly in the Bees' favor as they scooped up 48, while the Eagles had 19.  Defense was a key factor in the win for SCAD.  Goalie Matt Mantel saved 16 shots on goal for the Bees while providing 4 ground balls himself.  But leading the way in that category was Doug Henry, who had 11 of the 48 total groundballs.

It was all SCAD this day and Mike Cummings and the Bees have one remaining road game before the Southeast Lacrosse Conference (SELC) tournament begins on April 25.  Playing their last home game for the Bees were Alec Groff, Aaron Farabee, Riley Mate, Tyler Hoerauf, Riley Mann, and Matt Dean.  Thank you guys for 4 years of great effort and results.  You will be missed.

SCAD next travels to Laurinburg, N.C. to take on St. Andrews Presbyterian on April 12 at 2 p.m.  Keep up the good work guys!   Go Bees!
