Schmaus and Plavsic Win Singles on Senior Day

4/11/2014 4:50:00 PM

The women fell behind early in all three doubles slots and were unable to pull out a single victory, which would prove to be very important.  At No. 1 doubles, Theresa Schmaus and Maja Plavsic lost 4-8.  Daniella Arcila and Maria Barragan played one game better, but fell to Brenau at No. 2 by a score of 5-8.  Carolina Viteri and India Hart played well at No. 3, but suffered the same fate at Arcila and Barragan when they lost at 5-8.  So going into singles play, the Lady Bees needed to win 5 of the 6 contests.

The Bee's came out hot in singles winning 3 of the first 4 matches.  At No. 3, senior Maja Plavsic was the first off the court when she won 6-2 and 6-2.  She was quickly followed by the other SCAD senior, Theresa Schmaus playing at No.1.  Schmaus won her match at 6-4 and 6-3.  When Viteri won at No. 6 (6-3, 6-2) the Lady Bees were getting excited.  India Hart played a tough opponent in the 4th slot for SCAD, but just could not get her game going.  She lost 0-6 and 0-6.

Two more wins were needed for the Bees to pull off a great comeback.  They needed both Barragan and Arcila, playing at Nos. 2 and 5, to win their matches.  Arcila had to go three sets, but pulled it out in a third set for a 6-2, 2-6. 6-3 win to set the stage for Barragan.  SCAD had now won 4 of the 5 singles matches.  They needed just one more victory.

Barragan played her heart out.  The match went to a third set with Barragan coming back in the 2nd set for a 6-1 win after losing the 1st set 1-6.  The momentum seemed to favor SCAD.  Unfortunately, Barragan fell short in the deciding 3rd set.  She lost 3-6 and Brenau had its 5-4 victory.  It was a heartbreaking loss for the ladies as they came so close after being down 0-3.

It was Senior Day for the Lady Bees as they honored their two seniors, Theresa Schmaus and Maja Plavsic, but it was not the last day for Schmaus and Plavsic on the courts.  One more home match remains for the ladies.  SCAD takes on Warner University at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, in a contest at Bacon Park.  Come out and support your Bees in this last regular home match of 2014 season.  The Bees will have one remaining match at Coastal Georgia on Sunday, April 13 before SCAD takes part in The Sun Conference Championships.
