In a matchup of the NAIA's second- and third-ranked teams, the Georgia Gwinnett women's tennis team took the double contests 2-1 in close matches over the SCAD Women's Team. The Lady Bees were unable to win in singles and lost 8-1.
Doubles
Doubles play featured a pair of 9-7 matches as the Grizzlies scratched out an early 2-1 lead.
Schmaus and
Maja Plavsic (ranked 4th nationally), lost 9-7 to Valeria Podda and Helena Korumpis who rank as the nation's number two overall doubles pair.
The #2 team of
Maria Barragan and
Daniella Arcila earned SCAD its lone point with a 9-7 win, but an 8-2 win by Paloma Cortina and Chiara Di Salvo over
Carolina Viteri and
Ana Dominguez gave the Grizzlies their lead that they never lost.
Singles
Georgia Gwinnett's Podda, who ranks fifth in the country in the ITA's latest NAIA women's singles rankings, defeated the nation's number one player in
Theresa Schmaus, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 11-9. It was a particularly competitive match as Schmaus came back from a first set defeat to win the second set in a tiebreak. It came down to a third set where Podda won the match by defeating Schmaus 11-9. Schmaus's third set loss was the only singles match to go to a third set.

Maria Barragan (#3) lost 6-3, 6-3;
Daniella Arcila (#4) lost 6-1, 6-3;
Carolina Viteri (#5) lost 6-0, 6-3; and

The Bees fell to 1-2 with today's loss. It was not a good day for the Lady Bees, but they will be back again tomorrow to take on Benedict College in a 9 a.m. start at Bacon Park.
