Joel Ax leads SCAD against Florida Tech

10/28/2014 6:16:00 PM

The SCAD Men's Swim team opened up the 2014-15 season in a dual meet with Florida Tech at the Chatham County Aquatic Center in Savannah, Georgia. It was a competitive meet that was not decided until the final event of the day. Florida Tech edge out a victory by seven points in the 11th and final match of the day. Despite the preseason loss, it was a good start to the SCAD swim season.

Sophomore swimmer Joel Ax gave show a lot of strength in the competition. Ax participated in two individual events and one medley event and finished first in all of them. Ax took the honors in the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Fly. He also was a part of the 400 Yard Medley team of Karl Hegwein, Styrbjorn Torell and Tim Jarnvik that took honors in the first men's event of the day.

The men were leading the meet all the way through the ninth event of an 11-event meet. It came down to the final competition of the day, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, to decide the victor. The Bees came up three-and-a-half seconds short and were edged out by Florida Tech with a final score of 106 to 99.

Good swims were turned in by freshman Tyler Prescott, who touched the pad first in the 200 Yard Individual Medley. Torell and Hegwein added victories in the 100 Yard Breast and the 100 Yard Back, respectively. In spite of a disappointing loss, it was a good day for the men as Head Coach Chris Conlon expressed his approval in their performances. It looks like another good year for the men as they look ahead to their next competition with Georgia Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 11, in Atlanta.
