M. Lacrosse Defeat Florida Gulf Coast 10-8

4/14/2013 8:05:00 AM

The men's lacrosse team needed two final victories to finish the 2013 season above .500.  They are halfway there as they defeated conference rival Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Florida on Saturday.  The Bees are now 6-6 overall and will head to Statesboro, Georgia to play its last conference match of the season against Georgia Southern.

Saturday's match against Florida Gulf Coast was all SCAD in the first half of play as the Bees jumped off to a 5-1 lead.  Increasing the lead by two in the 3rd period to 9-3 seemed to put the match out of reach; however, Gulf Coast managed to produce 5 goals in the final period and the Bees had to hold off their conference rivals for a final 10-8 victory.

It was a good win for SCAD and was a key in the Bees receiving an invitation the SELC Championship Tournament on 4/26 in Johns Creek, Georgia.  The Bees hold a head-to-head advantage in the Southeast standings with one match remaining so no matter how SCAD does against Georgia Southern, it will not affect their tournament invite; however, there is an extra incentive for the Bees.  They want to go undefeated in conference play, and they want to finish the season above .500 with a win over Georgia Southern.

Shelton Polka led the way for the Bees in the Gulf Coast victory.  He scored 3 of the goals and assisted on 2 others.  Aaron Farabee and Darren Martin were right behind Polka as each scored 2 goals with Farabee assisting on a third.  Matt Dean, Cody Sienkiewicz, and Mike McQuaid each scored one goal for SCAD with Shawn Horsey contributing an assist.  Goalie Kreyton Polka had 11 saves to secure the Bees' victory and a place in the SELC Championship Tournament in Johns Creek on 4/26.
